Triangle European Exchange (Outgoing)

What is the difference between Socrates and ERASMUS?

There is actually no difference. 'Socrates' encompasses education from school through University to adult education. 'ERASMUS' is the part of Socrates that covers the higher education sector.

Where can I go on exchange?
Current exchange countries are France and Austria. The Dean's office in negotiation with other European counties, as soon as these links are formalised we will post details to this website.

What are the benefits spending part of my course in another University?

Who can participate?
Students selected will have had an unblemished academic record and will be able to speak the appropriate foreign language to approximate A level standard.

Year 3
A limited number of students may apply to study two of the 9 week third year units. Thus they would study one of the Medicine and Surgery units in Bristol starting in September and then go to Europe for 18 weeks to study Musculoskeletal Disorders and the second Medicine and Surgery Unit.

Before progression to Year 4 students will need to have pass the assessments for all four Year 3 Units in Bristol and should have completed the Year 3 SSM portfolio. Because our curriculum in the third year is undergoing change we currently have two firmly agreed exchanges available. They are with one of the Paris universities and with Vienna. The exchange previously in existence with Strasbourg is under negotiation and we are negotiating one with Bordeaux.

Year 5
Students can opt to use their Elective and final year SSC period to visit any of the ERASMUS exchange universities. The same regulations apply as Year 3 applicants.

Students will carry the responsibility to ensure that the aims and objectives of the Unit/SSC have been met by seeking out learning experiences whilst abroad.

What if I don't speak the language?

The University Language Centre is available for updating your foreign language to the required standard. However many universities in Scandinavia teach in English. You are advised to check out the requirements in any case.

Will I receive academic credit?
European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) means that the approved credits are awarded by your host university and converted to our system on your return.

What about fees and funding?
There is in place a reciprocal arrangement for fees, though for less than a year you are advised to read the full leaflet. Student grants are available for periods of 4 months or more, and other categories of grant are also available.

The European Office administers the student exchanges with universities under the programme and helps set up new links according to demand. Each year we are able to receive students as well as sending you off to study at a partner university.
